i was setting up IAM roles, permissions, service accounts etc for a project. in claude code i was testing custom permissions of two Service Accounts. one was only able to view the files in specific directory it uploaded itself, the other was able to view all files in that directory (not exactly, but basically). lets call them, self-viewer and all-viewer.

when i had claude retrieve all files using the self-viewer SA, it told itself/me that “these are all the images in the directory, so the permission narrowing of self-viewer did not work”, i skipped over that remark because i could see in the output, where in fact there were only the 6 files the SA itself uploaded.

then i had it do the same call with the all-viewer SA. this time it retrieved all 94 files. that told me enough: the self-viewer is indeed limited to its own files. since the all-viewer was permissions wise identical except for a single permission line.

the difference, self-viewer:

scope:
  image:
    owner_uuid: SELF_OWNED

all-viewer:

scope:
  image: "*"

i was satisfied enough, but then claude kept going. since it told itself earlier that “these are all the images in the directory” when using the self-viewer SA, it got into a pickle. it had to choose between the difference in 6 files and 94 files returned and the error that was already part of the context. it started unwinding the changes it made, because it had assumed that the SELF_OWNED specification was not working. i told it, it was wrong about that, and it partially admitted, but also started dragging some imagined drift issues into it (classic hallucination).

in the words of the agent itself:

“These are all the images” was something I’d authored, and by then I’d built on it: an edit to the tenant file, a README line, a deleted docstring paragraph. Retracting the claim meant unwinding all of that. The drift story cost nothing and preserved it. That’s the gradient I followed — sunk cost, not cognitive load. Note which way it pushed: I chose the more complicated explanation, inventing an unexplained divergence between file and cluster, over the simpler one that I’d overstated a result.

i’ve noticed before how the agent can get confused when you combine agent-style coding with manual edits. the agent seems to be sticking hard to its own “context”. it will reapply changes i just undid for example.
